On average, we spend one third of our lives working. Work is such an essential component of one’s life and it is no surprise that so much research is devoted to understanding how a work environment can impact people. For example, a team of researchers conducted an extensive study with 700 participants so that they can test whether there is a direct correlation between happiness and productivity. Oswald and colleagues (2015) determined that “there is a causal effect between human wellbeing and human performance.”
At IntelliPro, our recruiters are proud of the company’s unique culture and passionate about their work. We recently talked with a few recruiters who just joined IntelliPro to learn their perspectives on why working as a recruiter is so rewarding. We were also curious to know why they exactly accepted a job offer from IntelliPro among different job opportunities that were presented to them.
The reasons for joining the staffing and recruiting industry are varied. Many of the interviewees tried different careers before they recognized they were passionate about helping people. Xiao Yuan holds a PhD and had spent most of her career as an educator before she joined IntelliPro as a recruiter. Yuan felt she needed a faster pace and recognized that her good interpersonal skills can be well utilized in the recruiting industry. Gabriel Ribeiro, IntelliPro’s account director, had already worked in the recruiting and staffing industry for ten years before joining IntelliPro. For him, the greatest motivation is helping people at an important juncture of their lives. Ribeiro also shares that the dynamic nature of the job involves a 360-degree view of the situation and deep understanding of both personal and professional aspirations.
Quynh Tran, IntelliPro’s senior technical recruiter, is passionate about helping people as well. She is an avid volunteer and spent part of her career doing sales and business development. Although Tran discovered recruiting by chance, she fell in love with meeting and helping people: “there is nothing better than calling someone and telling them they got a job.”
Michelle Chuang and Jeff Chen, who both joined IntelliPro as recruiters a couple of months ago, echoed the same sentiment. They tried other careers in the past and recognized that being in a position to help people was the most rewarding experience for them.
The unanimous answer was that a good recruiter needs to be a great communicator and have a genuine interest in people. But there is more to it. According to Ribeiro, a good recruiter needs to be empathetic, “they need to understand people’s likes and fears” in order to help and advise job candidates on their job search.
Chen felt that IntelliPro was very up to date and attuned to how COVID-19 affected workplace. With IntelliPro’s recruiters, he was able to be fully transparent about the gap in his employment and received full support.
Meeting with top executives was a deal breaker for many of them. Tran was interviewing with multiple companies and had three offers on the table when she spoke with the IntelliPro’s executives, the chief executive officer, Yisu Jin, the chief operating office, Ella Zheng, and global head of talent development, Edwin Chang. Tran was amazed by their openness and their enthusiasm: “It was very much the passion that you see in them that makes you believe in the company.”
Chuang had a similar experience: “I’ve never been at a company that is this supportive, like where a CEO talks to us. I’ve never been at a company like that.”
IntelliPro is growing rapidly and gaining a bigger footprint in the IT market every day. According to Ribeiro, IntelliPro’s true advantage is its agility. Decisions are made fast, the CEO, Yisu Jin, comes from a strong entrepreneurial background and quickly responds to sound requests for improvements. Unlike other companies who have rigid cultures, IntelliPro is not risk adverse, decisions are made very fast if there is a sound technological or business reason to make the move. Another huge advantage according to Ribeiro is IntelliPro’s global presence: “we have a chance to exchange our ideas with colleges in China, Singapore, Europe and Canada, which is magnificent.” This gives IntelliPro’s employees ample opportunities to learn from different cultures as well as through challenges teams experience in various locations.
All other interviewees also all agreed that the culture at IntelliPro is very supportive and allows for professional growth. The structure of the company is such that recruiters can freely choose what projects they can work on while receiving full support from their peers and mentors.
Most importantly, IntelliPro is committed to providing excellent experience to its candidates and clients. IntelliPro not only provides the best talent but serves as a trusted advisor. According to Ribeiro, IntelliPro’s recruiters often serve as business consultants and suggest staffing solutions to the clients that are most beneficial long term. IntelliPro’s recruiters are equally committed to advising candidates about what is best for them and their long-term career goals.
